If you buy foam for electronics, automotive, medical or consumer products, you will eventually see UL94, RoHS and REACH on your requirement sheet. These certifications are not optional extras — they are how your customer verifies that the foam is safe to sell. Here is what each one means and what you should confirm with your foam supplier.

UL94: Flammability Rating

UL94 is a flammability standard published by UL (Underwriters Laboratories). The most common ratings are HB, V-2, V-1 and V-0, where V-0 is the most demanding — the material self-extinguishes within 10 seconds of flame removal without dripping flaming particles. For EV battery packs, electronics enclosures and many automotive applications, V-0 or V-1 flame-retardant foam grades are frequently specified. Bofeng Foam produces flame-retardant XPE, IXPE and IXPP series for these applications; confirm the exact rating and test method required for your product.

RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances, EU 2011/65/EU) restricts lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and certain flame retardants in electrical and electronic equipment. If your foam goes into anything electronic — from chargers to battery packs — you will need RoHS compliance documentation from your supplier.

REACH: Chemical Safety for the EU Market

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, EC 1907/2006) regulates chemical substances placed on the EU market. Foam supplied into the EU should comply with REACH obligations, and buyers will request supporting declarations or SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) confirmation.

How to Verify a Supplier's Certifications

  • Ask for the test report or certificate, not just a marketing claim.
  • Confirm the rating applies to the specific density and thickness you will use — flame-retardant behaviour can vary with part geometry.
  • Ask whether the certification covers the production batch you are buying.
  • For regulated end-uses (EV, medical, children's products), review additional standards such as EN71, ASTM, CPSIA or IATF16949 with your quality team.
  • Request samples and have them re-tested if your application is safety-critical.
