Closed-cell and open-cell are the two basic structures of foam, and the distinction drives almost every material decision in packaging, insulation, flotation and sealing. This article explains what the two structures are, how they behave, and how to choose between them for your product.
What Is Closed-Cell Foam?
In closed-cell foam, each air pocket is a sealed bubble with its own wall. Water and air cannot travel between cells. The result is a material that does not absorb water, delivers consistent thermal and acoustic insulation, recovers well from compression, and holds its dimensions over time. Cross-linked polyethylene foams — XPE, IXPE and IXPP — are classic closed-cell foams.
What Is Open-Cell Foam?
In open-cell foam, the cells are interconnected, so air and moisture can move freely through the material. Open-cell foam is soft, flexible and a very good acoustic absorber, but it absorbs water and has much poorer thermal-insulation performance. Common examples include many polyurethane (PU) foams and felt-like materials.

- Water resistance: closed-cell repels water; open-cell absorbs it.
- Thermal insulation: closed-cell insulates far better; open-cell is used mainly for acoustics and comfort.
- Density and weight: open-cell is usually lighter and softer; closed-cell can be engineered from very soft to rigid.
- Compression recovery: closed-cell (especially cross-linked grades) recovers reliably; open-cell tends to take a set over time.
- Sealing: closed-cell forms effective gaskets and moisture barriers; open-cell does not.
When to Use Which
Choose closed-cell foam when you need:
- Thermal insulation (buildings, ducting, cold storage, EV battery packs).
- Buoyancy and waterproofness (flotation aids, marine applications).
- Sealing and moisture barriers (gaskets, underlayment, packaging for moisture-sensitive goods).
- Clean, dust-free protection for electronics and precision parts.
Choose open-cell foam when you need:
- Sound absorption in open spaces (studio panels, acoustic tiles).
- Soft, breathable cushioning (mattresses, seat padding).
- Filtration or fluid wicking.
