XPE Crawling Mat

An XPE crawling mat is a play surface for infants and toddlers, made from cross-linked polyethylene foam. It is used in homes, in early-learning centres and in kindergartens, and its job is to turn a hard floor into a surface a child can fall onto.

Cross-linked polyethylene is not a new material: it has been the standard core in automotive trim and in packaging for years. What changed is that the sheet can now be produced soft enough, and finished neatly enough, to be used as a floor covering in its own right. That is what made it a practical choice for baby products.

Features

  1. Safe surface for a child. Cross-linked polyethylene carries no plasticiser and no formaldehyde-based binder — the two additives most often flagged in soft floor coverings. It is produced to the environmental standards that apply to articles used by children, and it does not irritate skin.
  2. Soft, with controlled rebound. The closed-cell structure deforms under a knee or a falling body and returns to shape. That cushions the hardness of the floor without the trampoline effect of a very springy mat, so a child learning to walk is not thrown off balance.
  3. Non-slip and hard-wearing. The embossed surface grips bare feet, socks and clothing, which matters most at the moment a child is pulling up or turning. The same surface takes years of crawling, toy traffic and washing without breaking down.
  4. Water-resistant and wipe-clean. Closed cells give liquid no path inwards, so spills and accidents stay on the surface and come off with a damp cloth. Nothing soaks into the core, which is what allows the mat to be cleaned properly rather than merely dried.
  5. Warm underfoot. Foam is a poor conductor of heat, so the mat does not draw heat out of a child the way bare tile or concrete does. That is the whole reason it is comfortable to sit on through a cold floor season.
  6. Light enough to move. A mat of this material can be lifted, shaken out and stood against a wall by one person, so a play area can be put down and taken up in the same room.
  7. Made to size. Mats are cut to your thickness, dimensions and printed pattern. XPE sheet is produced from 3 mm to 15 mm in a single layer, or heat-bonded into multi-layer board from 15 mm to 200 mm, in widths from 500 mm to 2000 mm, in black, white, grey or a custom colour.

Applications

  1. Homes. Living room, bedroom or nursery — a defined play area that protects a child from a hard floor, and that can be rolled away when the room goes back to being a room.
  2. Early-learning centres and kindergartens. Activity areas, play corners and rest areas. The mat has to survive a full class of children, be washable between sessions, and be soft enough that a fall from standing is not an incident.
  3. Outdoors. Light enough to carry to a picnic, a campsite or the beach, where it gives a clean, dry surface over grass, sand or gravel.
  4. Sensory and rehabilitation work. The same cushioning and grip are used in children’s sensory training and in balance work with older users.
  5. Pet mats. The water-resistant, non-slip surface works as a sleeping and feeding mat for pets, and cleans up the same way.
