Floor acoustic foam

XPE underlayment is one of the most common materials under laminate and engineered wood floors. It smooths the subfloor, blocks moisture, reduces impact noise and adds a slight cushion underfoot. This guide covers thickness, density and foil-faced options so you can pick the right XPE underlayment for your project.

Why Use XPE Underlayment?

  • Moisture barrier — closed-cell XPE stops damp rising from the subfloor, protecting laminate planks.
  • Impact sound reduction — absorbs footfall noise, improving acoustic comfort in apartments and offices.
  • Surface levelling — fills minor subfloor imperfections so laminate locks together cleanly.
  • Thermal insulation — adds a warm layer underfoot.

Which Thickness Should You Choose?

  • 2 mm — the standard choice for most laminate floors; low compression, stable joints.
  • 3 mm — extra comfort and impact absorption where the subfloor is smooth.
  • 5 mm — higher acoustic performance; check manufacturer limits, as very thick underlayment can stress plank joints.

Density Matters

Thickness alone does not define quality. Higher-density XPE (60-100 kg/m³) resists compression so the floor does not sink under furniture, and it recovers better over time. Low-density underlayment is cheaper but can pack down, leaving visible ridges at the seams.

Foil-Faced XPE for Underfloor Heating

Installation Notes

  • Use a single layer at the thickness your flooring manufacturer approves.
  • Leave a small gap at the walls so the floor can expand and contract.
  • Overlap seams or tape them to keep the moisture barrier continuous.
